How a nitrogen generator works

A nitrogen generator is an industrial system that produces nitrogen gas on-site by separating it from the surrounding air. Ordinary air consists of approximately 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and small amounts of other gases. While nitrogen is abundant in the atmosphere, industrial processes often require nitrogen of higher purity, as well as controlled flow and pressure. Nitrogen generators fulfill this need by filtering compressed air to isolate nitrogen molecules from oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapour. This provides a steady supply of purified nitrogen gas, eliminating the dependency on delivered cylinders or bulk storage tanks, which can be costly and logistically complex.

Modern nitrogen generation systems use two main technologies: membrane nitrogen generators and Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) nitrogen generators. The choice between these technologies depends on the specific nitrogen quality and application requirements.

Membrane Nitrogen Generation Systems

BLUTEK’s membrane nitrogen generators use selective permeation technology to deliver a continuous, high-purity nitrogen supply (up to 99.9%) for various industrial applications. These compact, efficient units are easy to install and maintain, and can operate reliably in extreme ambient temperatures.

Key Benefits:

  • High nitrogen purity (up to 99.9%)

  • Simple installation and low maintenance

  • High Efficiency

  • Stable Flow

  • Very low noise level

  • Operate in Extreme High and/or Low Ambient Temperatures

  • Flexible configurations: standalone, skid-mounted, or containerized

  • Customizable to meet specific operational and environmental requirements

Operation Principle: Compressed air is filtered and dried before entering hollow fiber membranes. Through permeation, oxygen, water vapor, and CO₂ are removed, while nitrogen is retained and delivered to the application. Proper air treatment is essential to prevent membrane clogging.

PSA Nitrogen Generation Systems

BLUTEK’s PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) nitrogen generators deliver a reliable, high-purity nitrogen supply using advanced air separation technology. Designed for flexibility and efficiency, these compact and customizable systems are ideal for a wide range of industrial applications, including both standard and high-demand environments.

Key Benefits:

  • Reliable nitrogen production with low energy consumption

  • Operate in Extreme High and/or Low Ambient Temperatures

  • Flexibility. Modular design for scalable capacity and backup options

  • Compact footprint—fits through standard doorways

  • Available in skid-mounted, shelter-based, or containerized formats

  • Customization: Each system is tailored to local ambient conditions and installation site classifications, ensuring seamless integration into customer-specific operations.

Operation Principle: PSA technology separates nitrogen from compressed air by adsorbing oxygen and trace gases, allowing nitrogen to pass through to the application. The system’s design and control features optimize output and minimize air consumption. Proper air filtration is essential to maintain performance and prevent clogging.

How Choose Between PSA and Membrane Systems

Factors such as ease of installation, specific customer requirements, location, and application also play a crucial role in selecting the right generator. Membrane technology is typically ideal for applications requiring lower nitrogen purity, while PSA technology excels in delivering higher purity levels. Nitrogen Generation Package

A nitrogen generation package is a complete system designed to produce, store, and distribute nitrogen directly on-site. While the nitrogen generator is the core component, several supporting elements work together to ensure consistent performance and gas quality.

A typical nitrogen generation package includes:

  1. Air Compressor – Supplies compressed air to the system.
  2. Dryer – Removes moisture to protect downstream components.
  3. Filters – Eliminate oil vapor and solid particles.
  4. Air Receiver – Stabilizes air pressure and flow.
  5. Nitrogen Generator – Separates nitrogen from oxygen and trace gases.
  6. Nitrogen Receiver – Stores nitrogen to meet peak demand.

Nitrogen can be used directly from the generator or stored in a tank to ensure a continuous and reliable supply.
